<Projects>
this is a short introduction to some of the projects i've been working on in the past few years.<Edward Tufte's sparklines: Intense, Simple, Word-Sized Graphics.>
I first started thinking about sparklines (I didn't know the name then) after reading Edward Tufte's book thrilogy. At the time we considered using them for our intranet (I used to work at a financial company).Later, I came across this post on ET's site, and decided to write a quick perl implementation of the idea.
<boards of directors : a social networks analysis of corporate boards in america>
a project I started while taking duncan watts' social networks class at columbia. it analyzes the inter-relations of corporate boards of directors as established by their members.there's an important number of people who are members of two or more corporate boards, creating a "connection" among these boards. the question i pose is wether there is a correlation between the "connectedness" a board and the size, market cap or index membership of the company.
I've created a simple perl spider that harvests board membership info from the web, taking "snapshots" of each board and dumping this data in a database. then i analyze this data trying to establish which companies are more connected, which sectors they belong to, and try to establish a correlation with the s and p, nasdaq and dow jones indices.
The project can now be found here, as part of the work im doing for my Ph.D.
<bone coduction>
i worked on this project as part of my undergraduate work at nyu, with natalie jeremijenko.the project consisted on an investigation on the feasibility of using bone conduction in public interfaces. we built a chair that would let you listen to sounds through bone conduction, so only the person sitting would hear them.
we even published a paper about it at sigchi 2001. more information and some pictures if you click on the appropiate menu entry on the left.
<coke machine, or how to visualize incomplete contracts>
this project explores how externalities can be represented through the variability of the price of a product.please follow the link on the left for more information.
<bangbang video server>
a video cataloging server i developed in conjunction with my friend josh for the bureau of inverse technology. it catalogs video bits from different sources or streams (using webdav), and lets the user create a compilation, and also add annotations to it.you can also visit the bangbang server at the bureau.
<cogBlog : a concept-networked blog>
Another project I developed with josh, cogBlog attempts to connect various user logs through the use of explicit conceptual connections and daily news stories.Current features include:
* Ability to enter in user logs by user
* Ability to create conceptual connections between different blogs
* Ability to associate daily news events with each blog
* Ability to see logs by either concept or news event
* SVG Concept Map showing the connections between various entries.
